All A Twitter
Twitter is an online social networking service often described as "a service for friends, family, and co-workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?"
The service, created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey gained worldwide popularity very fast. It now has over 500 million active users and the number is getting higher. You can tweet in more than 20 languages and the company is still adding them. Twitter features "tweets", messages you can post to your profile. You only have 140 characters to use so make them count.
There is a wide variety of purposes you can use Twitter for: both your business and personal use. You can post tweets in order to find people or businesses in the area you're interested in. If you run a website you can increase traffic and provide new visitors for it every single day. You have the chance to promote your business by offering special deals and promotions through Twitter.
But even if Twitter is a very useful business tool, many users only share what they are doing with their friends online. Through the photo-sharing service, TwitPic or YFrog you can post photos of yourself or just about anything in order to show them to your friends. You have the possibility to share links to interesting content, photos, video, music and real-time accounts from people who are in the middle of an important event or crisis.
One of the most complex functions of the Twitter search is the hashtag. This is a topic that starts with a hash (#) and it is used to spread information and also to help organize it. For example, if you type #FollowFriday you can see all the conversations related to this topic. If you type @ in front of your username on twitter you have the possibility to see all the replies and conversations that contain your name.
On Twitter there are people from everywhere at any given time that tweet about almost everything, so you can easily follow whoever you want depending on your interests. Unless you are a celebrity like Aston Kutcher or Alyssa Milano who apparently are the most active celebrities, you will be disappointed to see that you won't be followed as much. But the number and quality of your followers will depend on your posting skills. It is better to have a few followers that care about you, than a huge number of followers you don't even know or are interested in. So don't fall for bots, spammers and marketers.
It is important to use a picture for your avatar that is actually showing you and not your cat. It should be clear and very decent if you want quality followers. Try to fill out your bio, which is a maximum of 160-characters long, with interesting information about you, your hobbies, or interests. That way you will definitely get followers. If you have a website you are proud of, post it. Use bit.ly to shorten the link.
If you're looking for a job, make your Twitter presence employer-friendly by adding your job pitch in your bio, using a professional looking avatar and most important, tweet about your job search. Try to include a link to your resume on your bio.
You can experience Twitter on your mobile by using one of the free apps. Twitter also works with SMS clients.
Every day, millions of people are connected to Twitter to share interests, information and find out what's happening in the world at any given moment. If you find yourself craving for this stuff, don't wait any longer and go create an account on Twitter.
